Monkeypox: A Recent Update and What Parents Need to Know

Hey Parents! We know you're always looking out for your little ones. Let's talk about monkeypox. It's a rare disease that's kind of like a milder version of smallpox. Recent Update: As of August 29, 2024, Singapore has reported 13 confirmed cases of monkeypox this year, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH). All detected cases have been of the less severe Clade II infection. While the immediate risk of mpox to Singapore remains low, the virus is likely to make its way here eventually due to the country's global flight connections. How it spreads: ✅ Animal to Human: Through bites or direct contact with an infected animal. ✅ Human to Human: By touching an infected person's rash, bodily fluids, or breathing in their respiratory droplets. Symptoms: 😷 First, you might feel fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, and chills. 😷 Then, a rash starts on the face and spreads to the body, turning into blisters and scabs. Is it serious? Most people recover on their own, but it can be severe for young children, pregnant women, or those with weak immune systems. Good news: There's a vaccine that can protect you and your family from monkeypox. What can parents do? ✅ Stay updated on the latest news about monkeypox. ✅ Wash your hands regularly and avoid close contact with sick people. ✅ If you or your child have symptoms, see a doctor right away.
