If you were the education minister, what would you change about Singapores education system?
In no particular order... Suggestions to try 1. Allow more private schools. I would happily have kept my kids at their Montessori kindergarten, had they been allowed to offer the full primary school Montessori curriculum, 2. Allow more autonomy in curriculum at the primary school level for existing schools. 3. Create several through train schools in non brand name schools and see how many people opt to send their kids there because they don't want the pressure of the PsLE .. The kids can still take the psle but it will be less stressful. If it proves popular, create more. 4. Incorporate more enrichment onto school campuses, partnering with private sector if need be. Logistically it's so much easier. 5. More life skills training ... Budgets / personal finance, nutrition / meal planning, career Counselling, goal setting and time management etc. 6. better recognition of different learning styles, different talents and more options for those who struggle. 7. More teaching the kids to learn how to learn and figure things out for themselves as a group. Or as individuals .. Vs following instructions, doing endless ten year Series, memorising. Facts 8. More teaching about communication ... Not just how to do PowerPoint presentation - but how to speak ad hoc in public. What constitutes a good constructive debate. How to read and listen actively. 9. Smaller teacher student ratios. 10. More teaching of physical education / CCAs as exposure to different ways to be active and healthy, and socialise... With the goal that kids WANT to keep doing these sports or activities even when not required to. You may not need to use your primary two life cycles of a frog when you grow up, but you can and should still be practising the sports etc that you learned then .. Including things like yoga and tai Chi 11. Teaching stress management, including meditation ... I'm sure I'm missing things
Read moreGive education grants and scholarships to locals first. Based on merit of course. Sure we can extend it to foreigners and etc to grow. But I would keep it 80% local 20% foreigner. Why? Education is mother flipping expensive. Also let's ask the bigger question. What is the true purpose of education in Singapore? Is it to develop a competent workforce? What is a competent workforce? Is it being english speaking? is it being english and mandarin speaking too? Is it being able to do math quickly? Is it problem solving? Is it navigating a career? Is it being able to hold a job for more than a year? The current landscape is debatable. Primary to secondary to tertiary education. Ending at that point, is the person competent enough to work? Does having a degree make the person competent? If let's say the purpose of education is to develop a workforce, great. Next question would be what kind of workforce is it? *shrugs*
Read moreHonestly .. I wouldn't change anything about the system . School is for knowledge , how stressful the children is caused by the parents . Because parents compare . And parents make children go for extra tuition outside school. And eq , and life knowledge should be the parents job isn't it ? I mean we shouldn't expect the school to teach everything ? That's the job of the parents , not teachers or the education minister
Read moreEmphasis more on character building and also more hands on activity for kids instead of just academics. Because i believe having high education doesn't mean its good about everything . Without a good character its still nothing. and academics is just an add on bonus . Without academics but able to hands can help kids to learn more and also experience fun and real life stuff instead of purely from textbook !
Read moreSingapore's education system is great, but there are somethings that i think would be beneficial: - More opportunities to learn various languages as part of the curriculam - I would make sure there is more sex education in the senior years. - I would concentrate on making kid's more all rounded by making Community Service (Helping the needy), Art's & Sports mandatory.
Read moreMore emphasis on EQ. With a growing affluence in Singapore, I feel that a majority of the younger generation are entitled and detached. It would be good to keep them rooted to the ground. To prevent them from being too sheltered, more opportunities for kids to be exposed to overseas matters. They need to learn that hard work is still valid in our society.
Read moreI think we need to allocate more budget and time to education, we need to inform children more from school. When I sent my daughter to university, I read a lot of information. The article "Best Universities" https://a2knetwork.org/ was especially helpful to me and we already knew what we needed.
I would emphasise less on academics and more on sports and arts. I would also make Teachers more compassionate as they are moulding the next generation and our students are learning from them. So if Teachers show more sot skills, kids will model thy behaviour too

Emphasis more on character building. I believe we all have to come a age that realize being able to excel in academic allows you only to go that "far". Its the soft skills that enables a person to succeed in life.
