Are sore breasts in pregnancy common?

Breast pain is most common in the first trimester, though it can occur at any stage during pregnancy and lactation as pregnancy causes lactationbreast pain and soreness from pregnancy can be much more intense than that caused by PMS. Pregnancy-related breast pain is also likely to last longer. When pregnancy is causing breast soreness, the veins on the breasts may be more visible than usual and the areolas may be larger and bumpier.

One of the things we screen for diabetes in pregnancy, especially in earlier stages, is when the mother is growing very fast or if the mother is obese to start with (above 80kg). Doctors will always monitor the patient throughout pregnancy so gaining 15kg through the whole pregnancy in Singapore is quite common. Anything beyond and you growing very quickly, we will worry about the risk of diabetes - that's why you're not controlling your sugar well and getting bigger.

What is amniocentesis and when should I do it?

Amniocentesis is to put a needle into the waterbag under ultrasound guidance to draw out amniotic fluid, which is sent to the laboratory to culture chromosomes to check for chromosomal abnormality. It used to be the gold standard with an accuracy of more than 90%. Unfortunately, this procedure has a miscarriage risk of 1 out of every 200 patients, so it is not usually offered to patients unless for reasons such as - the nuchal translucency is very thick (which means a high chance of fetal abnormality) - the fetal abnormality test shows abnormalities and you want to determine if it is chromosomal abnormality. These days, we have other tests such as NIPT with high accuracy rate. If the NIPT shows abnormality, you would then need to undergo amniocentesis. If you have a strong family history of abnormality, amniocentesis will be offered to you.
