Manual breast pump

Hi Mummies, I’m a ftm going to be due soon in 2-3 weeks and looking to breastfeed my baby as much as possible. I understand that for ftm milk supply may kick on slightly later. I read online that colostrum is enough for newborn as their intake is not that much during their first few days. Is it true that in order to collect the colostrum, i must hand express manually using a manual pump because baby won’t be able to suck as it is thick? I already have Spectra S1- i read that it’s not advisable to use an electric pump as it will leads to oversupply right? Any advice from experienced mummies are welcome for me to understand better.. Thank you 😊

Hi, if you are having leaking from 34 weeks onwards, you may collect the colostrum using a cup and store it using syringes. From week 37 onwards, you may try hand express it.

Gestational Diabetes

For those Mummies with GDM, I’m just curious on what instance that our Dr will determine that one need to be on metformin or insulin when we no longer able to control our sugar level through diet? I heard that when our sugar level spike to above 7 or 8 continuously after meals? Is this true? Is it true also when we are at our last stretch of the pregnancy and the body not able to break down the sugar more efficiently as it was before could be 1 of the factor?

I was spiking quite a lot in my pregnancy. My doc was worried i am not eating enuf n suggested me to take insulin almost on every visit which i refused. But i was able to control my intake that time also ah.. occassional spike

How do you keep baby scan’s picture?

Hi Mummies, how do you store baby’s ultrasound scan pictures? I would like to keep it for memories. I read up that it will fade over time. Laminate with a hot thermal will spoil the picture. I was thinking if i keep it in a photo album, will it be able to retain the original version over a period of time?

make a photocopy of it. u can then laminate the photocopies

Prepping for Newborn arrival

Hi Mummies, ftm here. Have a few qns to clarify. - How many hanky/bibs would you recommend is enough to rotate? - What kind of bath towel would you recommend? - Is it advisable to get baby’s diaper bag before their arrival or i can get it later? Because i was thinking about when baby’s follow up checkup at the polyclinic after birth. - When do you start to buy diapers and wet wipes before your EDD?

- for feeding? i have about 10 1 bath towel - can buy online, those with a cap to wrap baby’s head out of the shower - can get diaper bag few weeks before edd - 1 month before edd in case you deliver early

When do you start to prepare for baby’s arrival?

Hi Mummies, I’m a FTM currently at 27 weeks + and looking for suggestions on when do you start to prepare for baby’s arrival? Such as washing of baby’s clothes, prepping baby cot, sorting out clothes (e.g 3-6, 6-9, 9-12 months etc) so that it is easier to take out when baby outgrow the clothes and move on to the next size. Other than that, when is it an ideal time to buy and standby a pack of NB diapers coz i read that baby may outgrew the NB size in no time depending on baby’s weight. At which week do you start to pack your hospital bag? & what do you pack for yourself and baby? Do i need to bring my breast pump during delivery? Will the nurse/LC able to guide me on the usage of breast pump at the ward? If it may help, I’ll be delivering at KKH.

Preparation can do towards the end of 2nd trimester before 3rd cause will be more tired in 3rd trimester. NB diapers - estimated they use about 10 daily. I looked up online to get free samples for all sorts of brands and bought some S size just in case. I packed my hospital bag at 35weeks but realised that I don’t need a lot. Didn’t bring breast pump as in the beginning bb drank very little anyway.

What do you eat during GDM?

Hi Mummies, I’m a ftm here and recently got diagnosed with GDM after i failed my OGTT. May i know what kind of food do you take? I’m meeting a dietitian only next week and would like to change my eating lifestyle as soon as i can before a proper session with the dietitian.

I'm also diagnosed with gdm. For me, I cut down on my portion of carbs. Fried food should also be minimised, because the breading contains carbs too.

Vomitting after i eat/drink

Hi Mummies, can i ask for opinion/suggestions from those who have experienced like me before.. I’ve been vomitting since yesterday, whatever i eat or drink, i will vomit everything out.. But i ate porridge for dinner last night and didn’t vomit. Today, after i had my breakfast and lunch i vomitted out everything too. This is the first time that this is happening. What should i do? Should i still monitor or walk in to GP or to the hospital?

Hi, how far along are you? The first 3-4 mths are like that. If you can take in porridge, then just go with porridge. Small meals & snacks in between. Go with fruits instead.. I was like that too. It’ll get better in 2nd trimester.

Difference between Spectra S1 & S1

Hello Mummies, May i know what is the difference between S1 & S1plus? I tried to google but can’t seems to be able to find the differences.. Or if you have any other breast pumps to recommend pls do so. #FTM

When do you start buying stroller and carrier?

Hi Mummies, When do you start buying stroller and baby carrier? I’m a FTM and wanted a rough timeline when to start buying the big ticket items. Also, does Mummy’s market sells Joie Litetrax 4 stroller and Tula carrier? I thought of going down to have a look and try before purchasing.

I started to buy in 2nd trimester because can still walk around and have a look at things. Can always search on mummy's market website for the items before going down to take a look at the physical item

Breast pump recommendation

Hi Mummies, Any recommendations for breast pump for FTM? I’m actually looking at Imani/Baby Express be Free but i did my research and found out that most of it recommends getting electric breast pump fot FTM like spectra S1. Please share your views. Thank you!

S1 is my fav! Imani2 i bought for back ofc use. I gt be free too, so far compare w Imani i2 I feel Imani more power & worth to get. Imani i2 now come w charging dock too!
