Till how many months am I supposed to have calcium and iron supplements after delivery?

My gynecologist advised me to take iron supplements for the period of 3 months and calcium supplements till I breastfeed my baby. Calcium and iron supplements are must for a nursing mother, otherwise she will be having deficiency. During the time of breastfeeding, the mother is not only eating for herself but also providing nutrition for the baby. A baby's need for calcium is significant in the early months -- for teething and bone development of the entire body. If the mother does not take enough calcium in her foods and dietary supplements, she will begin to lose her own calcium (from bones) that will get passed on to the baby through breast milk. This is why most doctors recommend iron and calcium supplements to the nursing mother. It is advised not to take iron and calcium supplements at same time as calcium slows down the absorption of iron. Iron should be taken after meals with some amount of vitamin C (citrus fruits and vegetables) for better absorption. Calcium should be taken between meals.

I am in my 36th week and I noticed an an increase in discharge. It also changes from watery to mucus like. What does it mean? Am I ready for labour?

It's Mucus plug and not a sign of labor. It's a sign that labor is likely coming soon! The mucus plug is exactly what it sounds like. It is a concentration of mucus that is deposited in the opening of the cervix to block germs and bacteria from entering the uterus. During pregnancy, the mucus is clear and would look much like a normal vaginal discharge. However, as the cervix begins to efface and blood is released, there may be some blood deposited onto the mucus plug. As your cervix dilates you will begin to lose the plug, either in bits of stringy, blood tinted mucus over a period of time, or all at once. This can happen up to two weeks before labor actually begins. The loss of the mucus plug should not be confused with a woman’s bloody show which occurs during labor as a woman begins bleeding prior to delivery. The bloody show will be different than the mucus plug as it is mostly blood and very little or no mucus.

I am in my first trimester and have been going through severe morning sickness. But to add to that, I had a nose bleed in the morning. Is that normal? Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening again?

have you seen a doc about the nose bleed? Come to think of it, my nose was really sensitive during pregnancy. I thot it was due to my flu that cause the skin to be irritated

I am sure it is possible not to know if you break your water. It can be as small as a little trickle or a huge gush, and many women think they be leaking urine. So my question is.... what if I sleep through labour?

Usually, once the water breaks, the woman will go into labour within 24 hours of the breaking. I reckon the contractions will signal to you that you are having your baby and it is quite unlikely that you will sleep through the process. So, in the meantime, do get as much rest as you can. :)

How would you know if it's false labor or the real thing?

My ob-gyn recommended that I only go to the hospital if the interval of my contractions are 5 mins or less. I suggest that you monitor the intensity and interval of your contractions.

I exercise regularly but since I am 2 months into my pregnancy, my mother asked my avoid ab exercises for sometime. Is this true? Any particular form of full-body exercise I can continue during my pregnancy?

first 3 months and last 3 months are very delicate and formative years. doing simple walks or basic stretches will be good. Ab exercises are rigorous even in basic forms hence its better to avoid. your belly is going to get bigger. so by not exercising now it's not that you will lapse into a mess. being healthy is a lifestyle necessity but being logical and practical is more than a necessity. I think yOUr mom is right. you can find Lamaze classes in your area tht will help u to keeP fit in your pregnancy. even the DVD of Lara dutta of yoga during pregnancy is good.

do you sing for your baby in the womb?

Yes I do sing and talk to my baby as often as I can. They do respond and listens to you.
