Preschool for foreigners

Are there any subsidies available in Singapore for expatriates at preschools for my 2-year-old child? My husband holds an employment pass with a monthly salary of $7800, and I am a homemaker. Balancing school fees and rent is challenging for us financially. I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations, particularly for more affordable schools. Thank you for your assistance.

Oh, I totally understand the pinch, balancing rent and school fees here is no joke! Unfortunately, from what I've heard, expatriates don't qualify for any government childcare subsidies in Singapore regardless of income level, so that's one option off the table straight away. That said, someone in my mum group mentioned that church-run kindergartens tend to be noticeably more affordable than the private centres, and some even have their own assistance schemes worth asking about directly. MOE kindergartens are another option people have had good luck with, the fees are much lower, though spots can be competitive and it really depends on availability near your area. It's also worth knowing that even among locals, working mothers get higher subsidy tiers than non-working ones, so the system does skew that way, for now, church kindy or MOE kindy seem like the most practical routes to keep costs manageable for your family.

Honestly, from what I've heard, My First Skool at Kim Keat generally has decent facilities and the curriculum seems structured and well put together, one parent I know mentioned the teachers were quite engaged and the learning environment felt purposeful rather than just babysitting. That said, I think the experience can vary a bit depending on the specific class and teacher your child ends up with, so it's worth visiting in person and asking about staff turnover before you commit. My neighbour brought her toddler there and felt the centre was well-maintained and the staff communicated regularly with parents, which gave her peace of mind. On the flip side, a few parents I've spoken to felt it's a bigger-chain kind of setup, so if you prefer a more intimate, small-centre feel, that's worth weighing up. Overall it seems like a solid option for the area, but doing a personal tour really does make a difference before you decide.

Advice needed

I’m considering of pulling out my 19 months from playgroup in a school and join mygym playgroup instead. Is this a good choice? My LO just entered the school 2 weeks ago but I can’t seem to align with the curriculum which the school provide.

Hey! Two weeks is still very early days, so I'd say don't rush the decision, but your instinct about curriculum fit is worth listening to. My Gym is quite different from a school playgroup in that it's much more movement and play-based, covering motor skills, social interaction and even some cognitive activities through structured free play, so if your LO thrives with that kind of learning, it could genuinely suit her better than a traditional classroom setup. My neighbour brought her toddler there around the same age and said the sessions felt engaging and age-appropriate, though she did note it leans more enrichment than academic, so it depends on what you're looking for at this stage. Honestly, both formats have their merits, school playgroup builds early classroom readiness while My Gym focuses more on physical and social development, so the real question is which gap you feel is more important to fill for your child right now. Since My Gym takes children from 19 months, I'd suggest going for a trial class first before committing either way.

Is it normal for 5 years old (gg 6) to have fever/cough/flu often?

My 5 years old (gg 6) daughter have been having fever almost every month. Is it normal? Been to 3 doctors, all say is normal because school a lot of children falling sick everyday some more we have ayounger son 3 years old (gg 4). They always share food together and we never separate them even if one of them are sick. But wanna check with the parents here, does your child fall sick easily?

It is indeed common that kids nowadays fall sick easily through air borne (fever, flu, cough,hfmd, covid like symptoms). It can be due to the environment, low immunity. My daughter's classmates majority of them have been falling sick and it is common. Nothing can be avoided. Even those kids in IFC/CC too. I guess just have to boost them with vitamin C, good supplement, vaccine and ensuring hygiene are cared for. 🥰

Teacher's day gifts

Hi mummies, teachers day is around the corner. Need suggestions from all the mummies here. For teachers day gift do mummies buy for all the teacher in the centre or just the teacher that is teaching my daughter class, NURSERY 1 class. Its my first time , daughter is in preschool.

I purchased for her teacher, co teacher and principal and of course, if she had her pre nursery teacher before this. Also usually ill give the cleaner aunty as a token of appreciation 🥰
