Heating baby food in microwave 👶

I really feel you on this because I used to just pop my girl's puree straight into the microwave without thinking twice about it. When my PD mentioned that microwaves can heat unevenly and create hot spots, I started being more careful about stirring thoroughly and always testing the temperature on my wrist before feeding her. It is such a small habit change but it gives me so much more peace of mind lah.

8mo baby hungry even after solids

My LO is 8mo and attends IFC. At home he eats solids fine but most days he is in IFC. As IFC is unable to catch the right timing he often rejects meal due to tiredness or too hungry (he rather have milk). But regardless in IFC or at home, he will still get hungry after eating solids and want milk. I'm not sure if it's due to this he not getting enough calories but he wakes up every 2 or 3 hours at night these days because he is hungry. He can drink up to 900 or 1000ml of milk per day. Even with solids I try to feed during dinner time. Is this normal?

Honestly, what you're describing sounds pretty familiar to a few of us who've been through this stage! At 8 months, milk is still the main source of nutrition, so it's quite normal for babies to still want milk after solids, the solids are really just complementing, not replacing, the milk yet. One of my mum friends actually had her IFC teacher suggest increasing the milk volume per feed when her baby kept signalling hunger, so it might be worth having a conversation with your IFC to see if they can adjust the timing or quantity a little better. The night waking every 2-3 hours does sound exhausting, and while it can be linked to not getting enough calories during the day, it could also just be a developmental phase at this age, some babies go through a rough patch around 8 months regardless of feeding. Do keep an eye on wet diapers as a rough gauge that he's getting enough overall, and since the night waking is quite frequent and you're concerned about his calorie intake, it's really worth bringing this up with your PD to rule out anything else going on!

Any good TCM for babies to recommend?

Hi, my baby girl often fall sick with flu and phlegm which lead to bronchiolitis. Does anyone have good TCM to recommend?

A few of us in my mum group have gone the TCM route for recurring flu and phlegm issues, so you're not alone in this! One of my mum friends brought her toddler to Raffles Chinese Medicine and said the physician there, Teo Pei Si, was really thorough in explaining how kids can get stuck with lingering phlegm after flu, she felt the treatment was quite tailored rather than just a generic formula. Some mums in our circle have also tried Eu Yan Sang TCM Clinic and ENOK TCM Clinic, both of which apparently do customised herbal blends for respiratory issues in little ones, though a couple of mums mentioned it can take a few sessions before you notice a real difference. Regis Wellness has come up too for cough and phlegm specifically, so that's another option worth exploring. That said, since your baby girl has had bronchiolitis before, it's really worth looping in her paediatrician or a specialist as well, just to make sure the TCM and conventional care are working together safely for her!

So stressed

Hi mummies! My 3.5 months baby has been having milk strike for the past 1 month plus. Honestly it gets really tiring whenever its feeding time. My baby will get so fussy during feeding time and she will only drink milk when she is drowsy. Sometimes it takes 1 hour to feed her. I don’t know what is wrong…. I have changed to other bottles, changed the teat, changed formula (fully formula fed) but still the same. I even brought her to the PD clinic and KKH but they said its just milk strike. Even after 1 month plus still the same. I feel so stressed up because i’m taking care of baby alone while my husband work 🥺 Sigh……. I really feel like giving up 💔

Oh mama, please don't give up, you are doing so well carrying this all on your own, and one month plus of this must be genuinely exhausting. A few of us went through something similar around that age, and what helped was checking a few things: whether baby might be teething early (yes, even at 3-4 months some babies start), whether she has any silent reflux that the PD might have missed, or even just gas discomfort making feeding uncomfortable for her. One thing that worked for some mums I know is trying to feed in a very calm, dim room with minimal distraction, since babies at this stage can get so easily overstimulated that they just refuse the bottle outright. It's also worth trying a slower flow teat even if you think the current one is fine, because sometimes the flow is slightly too fast and baby gets frustrated or gassy without us realising. Do hang in there, the drowsy feeding is okay as a temporary measure to make sure she gets enough, and this phase does usually pass. That said, since it's been going on this long, it's really worth going back to your PD or asking for a referral to a lactation consultant or paediatric specialist just to rule out anything else, you know your baby best, and it's always okay to push for a second opinion!

Not eating solid food

My boy is turning 15 months in a few days, for the past 1 month, he suddenly stop wanting to eat solid food. He use to be able to finish a bowl of Porridge, now he does not even want to have it after 2 to 3 spoons. We tried putting other solid food for him to pick and eat. He is also not interested. Me and my wife are so stressed up. Worry that he is taking in sufficient nutrients. Any advise or expert that we can consult to see if there is any problem. Greatly appreciate any advise.

It is so stressful when they suddenly refuse food like that, and you and your wife are definitely not alone in going through this. Around this age, some toddlers do go through a phase where their appetite drops and they become pickier, so it does not always mean something is wrong. That said, since it has been going on for a whole month and you are worried about his nutrition, it would really be good to bring him to your PD just to rule out anything and get proper guidance. The PD can also check his growth and weight to give you both more peace of mind.

Confinement after missed miscarriage?

Hi mummies. Just got back from gynea check and it’s confirmed that I’m experiencing a missed miscarriage. Can I confirm that confinement comes in after the bleeding? What kind did y’all do, to what extent and how long? Thanks in advance. #pleasehelp

I'm so sorry you're going through this, please know you are not alone and many of us have been there too. From my own experience, yes, confinement is generally observed after the bleeding has passed and your body has had a chance to start recovering, and most mummies I know kept it to about two to four weeks of rest, warm foods, and avoiding cold drinks and wind. It might be good to check with your gynae on what she recommends for your specific situation, since everyone's recovery is a little different. Take care of yourself first, and lean on your support system during this time.

Oh mama, I can feel your worry through the screen and you are definitely not alone in this. Fever coming back after a few days can be really unsettling, especially with such a young baby. I think it would be best to bring your little one to see the PD soon, just to be safe, because at 8 months old it is always better to get a professional to check rather than wait and see. Hang in there, you are doing a great job keeping such a close eye on your baby.

1yo refused to drink water

My 1yo girl just reduced from 4 to 3 formula feeds a day to encourage her to eat more. However, she refused to drink any water and gets badly constipated. We tried using her cup with straw, my cup with straw, milk bottle, she just struggles to get away without tasting. We also tried giving her a tini cup to sip but she chokes on the water. Tried sippy cup, refused to touch. Warm, cold, fruity water, all nope. Only time she drinks some is when I use soup spoon to feed, but she gets bored after awhile too. Help!!😭

You are definitely not alone in this, so many of us have gone through the same battle at this age. Since the constipation is already bothering her, it might be good to bring her to see the PD just to get some guidance on how to keep things moving comfortably while you work on the water issue. In the meantime, you can try offering water-rich foods like watermelon or cucumber to sneak in some hydration, and some mums find that just leaving a small cup within reach during playtime helps the child get curious and try on their own terms. Keep going, you are doing a great job trying so many different ways for her.

Sunflower Preschool Bedok

Hi all, any reviews or experiences with sunflower cove at bedok? Thinking of sending my lo there but there’s a fair bit of mixed but vague reviews.. 😓 do appreciate any help given!

I know how stressful it is trying to find the right preschool, so you are definitely not alone in feeling unsure! A friend of mine actually sent her child to a Sunflower outlet and she said the teachers were nurturing and quite attentive to the kids, which gave her a lot of peace of mind. It might be worth calling them to arrange a visit so you can get a feel for the environment yourself lah, sometimes seeing it in person makes all the difference.
