Cabergoline to stop milk production

Any mummies took cabergoline to stop milk production? How is it is it effective and how early was the effect? Im only day 5 PP, and very very engorged since yesterday. Pumping, cabbage etc all doesnt work i even went to KKH A&E and they helped me pumped out some milk and massage but im still engorged uptil today. Ive also asked them to prescribe me cabergoline to stop milk production as this pumping and breastmilk is taking away my mental health altho its only been a few days. Fyi not able to latch baby, only able to pump. Is cabergoline effective ?

Oh you poor thing, day 5 with severe engorgement sounds absolutely exhausting, and your mental health matters just as much, so please don't feel guilty about this decision. From what I've heard, cabergoline (Dostinex) does work for most mums to suppress milk, usually within a week, though some feel relief as early as 2-3 days, but the first few days can still be quite uncomfortable as the milk doesn't stop instantly. Someone in my mum group mentioned that wearing a tight bra and doing minimal hand expression just for comfort (not to fully empty) helped them get through that painful early window while the medication kicked in. That said, a few mums did raise that it's not officially approved specifically for this use, so the dosage and monitoring really does vary, which is why it's worth having a thorough conversation with your own doctor or a lactation-informed specialist at KKH to make sure you're on the right protocol for your situation.

Im only 5 days PP but i already felt engorged, for the first time. What should i do 😣 its hard as rock and very painful. Ive tried hot compress for few minutes, epsom salt, pump for 15 mins each side, only relieved for a few mins then it went back to being engorged. Is it normal ? And what should i do ? I scared if i pump again itll over stimulate. Fyi, im exclusive pumping only not latching. Im also currently taking fenugreek, should i stop? #FTM #firstbaby

Got the the supermarket and get cabbage. Store it in the fridge to chill it and apply on boobs. It helped me. But don’t apply for too long as it may affect milk production

Does fenugreek cause engorgement ? I just took fenugreek and woke up to an engorged breast for both sides

Colostrum pumping

Hi mummies, due to my nipple situation, i was advised to exclusively pump instead of latching. Those mummies that exclusively pump right from day 1 (not latching), other than hand express, do you use manual or electric wearable breastpump and hows your output ? Im only day 4 PP, and trying to pump to stimulate my colostrum,and using wearable breast pump (honestly, not religiously i skip night timings just to keep myself sane), but only manage to get few drops which only end up on the flange and not the inside. #advicepls #firsttimemom

was told by the LC at the hospital that first few days postpartum, can only hand express colostrum as its too thick to pump. you can use a colostrum syringe to collect your colostrum for the first few days

Formula feed baby from born

Hi mummies, i just gave birth few days ago and found out i have inverted nipple and not able to latch baby and that made me so sad and demoralised. They told me to pump or hand express instead, to also use pump to stimulate milk. I tried pumping for 3 times, was able to get very few drop of colostrum. But pumping kind of affecting my mental, especially when i need to pump every 3 hours to stimulate milk/colostrum. Altho i only tried few times. Currently baby on formula since birth. Am I really a bad mother if I want to only formula feed my baby instead of exclusive pump or mix feed ? Any mummies formula feed their baby from born and doing well ? #FTM #pleasehelp

Short inverted nipple not able to latch

Just gave birth and was so demoralised when i asked nurse to teach me how to latch baby and they told me my nipples are short and inverted and not able to latch ☹️ and i need to pump instead Anybody facing same issue and did you pump thruout your hospital stay? Even when not producing anything you still pump every 3 hrs ? #FTM #firstbaby

Csect which day latch baby

Those that went thru csect, on which day did you latch baby? And did your colostrum come out?

Soon after surgery we can latch baby. However, for me I cldnt do for long cz I was shivering intensely due to the after effect of epidural. A few hours later, the nurses wheeled baby into my room again to let me latch my boy. There was tiny bit of colostrum. For me I was unfortunately not making enough milk aft tt and baby had to stay in hosp aft my discharge due to jaundice so the hospital supplemented with formula during his stay.

Direct latch or bottle feed?

Breastfeeding mummies, do you prefer to latch or just bottlefeed ur LO ebm when outside? I tried to direct latch only but baby seem to still be hungry after latching both breasts

I prefer bottle feeding. Baby will drink more and I don’t have to keep looking for nursing rooms 😊.

Csect latch baby first day

Did you latch baby on the day of your csect? Is it ok to not latch baby on the first day due to extreme pain in the incision? Feeling guilty and scared if i dont start on the first day, i wont have colostrum afterwards. #FTM

Oh please don't feel guilty, this is such a common worry for C-sect mums, and honestly the picture is more balanced than people think. Many mums do manage to latch in the recovery room within the first couple of hours, and colostrum is usually there right away, but if the pain is too much to position baby safely, hand expressing is a perfectly valid option to keep stimulating supply while you recover a bit. A friend of mine had her C-sect at KKH and said the lactation nurse there actually showed her the football hold, which keeps baby's weight off the incision, she found that made a real difference in those first painful days. What's also reassuring is that some mums only got their colostrum flowing properly on day 2 or even day 5, and baby was still fine, so missing the very first latch is not the end of your breastfeeding journey. Do flag your pain level honestly to your care team though, they can adjust your pain relief so it sits at a manageable level, which really does make latching attempts more doable. That said, every recovery is different, so it's worth having a proper chat with your doctor or a lactation consultant about your specific situation.
