Successful pregnancy after miscarriage
To all mothers-to-be, here is a story to console, comfort and convince you in your journey towards embracing motherhood. We all know getting pregnant gives bundles of happiness and joy not only to the couple but to the entire family. However, during times of failure or miscarriage few couples struggle with it all alone. This story is to encourage and motivate such couples to continue their journey towards experiencing parenthood. Before myself and my husband first decided to get into family way, we first approached a gynecologist and checked whether I am physically healthy to become a mother. I found that I had borderline PCOD and the doctor prescribed medicine for 3 months to correct the PCOD along with recommendation/advise to shed few kilos. Then I got busy with my work and hectic schedules so I reduced weight automatically without any cautious effort. But this came with a baggage of physical and mental stress. After few months the doctor told me to stop the medication and confirmed that I was all ok and advised to not postpone pregnancy beyond 30yrs of age. Once we accomplished few couple goals in life, we decided to get pregnant but we didn't know about the ovulation cycle, 12-17 day rule etc. So we again approached the gynecologist. She did a follicular scan and explained us when we should plan to achieve a successful implantation. This is when COVID wave was at its peak and it was the very first wave. We went every month roughly on the 10-12th day from the onset of my monthly cycle. After 2 months of trying and no success the doctor gave me medicines. After 2 months, she again did a follicular scan and felt the follicle was healthy and viable so she gave a pregnyl injection to promote the ovulation. I am still not sure whether this is the thing that resulted in twin gestation. Myself and my husband were on cloud nine as we never anticipated anything negative and overjoyed as couples experiencing this first time. I had morning sickness, extreme nausea, disliked my favourite dishes. We went to the doctor roughly after 30 days of my missed periods and she confirmed it as twin gestation although the fetal pole was not seen. She told to come back after 10 days to repeat the scan and check for the fetal pole or heart beat. We went back and no success. She indicated that this could be a chance for potential miscarriage and to call her in case of any emergency in the next few days. On the same night after returning from the hospital, I had severe bleeding and stomach ache. We rushed to the clinic early in the morning and the doctor helped to complete the procedure. She advised us to plan again after a couple of months. It was purely devastating and we felt very disappointed and it took us quite a while to come back from that loss. I quit my job to focus on my health as I felt it was too stressful and eating up my personal time. Myself and my husband took this opportunity to spend quality time together in the next 2 months. Then we again planned and this time decided not to rush to the doctor during the early days of gestation. I did the pregnancy test at home using the Clear blue kit and it showed positive. Although it was happy news our joy didn't stay for long. Four-five days after I did the pregnancy test at home, I had spotting. We had no clue whether it is something serious or normal. We did all the googling and found positive and negative scenarios for such an indication. We even found articles on ectopic pregnancy. Then we went to see the doctor to confirm what it is, instead of assuming things. When the pregnancy test was repeated in the clinic it showed negative although a faint red line appeared several minutes later and the doctor couldn't see any gestation in the scan and suspected it to be an ectopic pregnancy. She asked us to repeat the scan in an advanced scan centre and they confirmed the same. This time scenario was a bit serious as the ectopic pregnancy could be a threat to the mother's life. The gynae took a blood test to find out the HCG level to decide the next course of action, she told us to be extremely vigilant and careful in the next 24 hrs and asked us to go directly to the hospital in case I experience any severe pain. Meanwhile we were waiting for the HCG score. If the HCG level was low and showing a decreasing trend, then the miscarriage is happening naturally and there is nothing to worry. In case if it is high then DNC has to be performed or in adverse cases fallopian tube has to be removed. We were totally devastated as it was the second time and worse this time. My husband was shattered as he was worried about my health rather than the loss. That night passed slowly with lot of emotional exchanges. Late in the night my doctor confirmed that HCG value is low and she was foreseeing a decreasing trend and also that I could anytime get periods like heavy bleeding which is the sign of miscarriage. Likewise I got severe bleeding in next 1-2 days and the miscarriage happened naturally which is very rare in case of ectopic pregnancy but that was the good thing happened during bad time. Since we had two miscarriages already the doctor prescribed a HSG test to see how healthy are my left and right fallopian tubes, whether they are open to let any ovulated egg pass by to the uterus. The test result was good and both my fallopian tubes were open. So the doctor advised us to continue trying and this time totally unexpected the doctor herself asked my choice whether I wanted to try with medication or without, since the past six months I was trying with medicines. Not sure if it was God's spell but I replied that I will go without medication. We continued trying and within 2-3 weeks from doing the HSG test, I missed periods. This time, we were already so sad and lost hope after experiencing two miscarriages. Although the pregnancy test using home kit was positive we decided to stay neutral until we heard the heart beat. After 6-7 weeks, we went to the doctor and after seeing the dark red line in the pregnancy kit she went for a straight ultrasound scan with Doppler and I heard the heart beat. It is such an unforgettable memorable experience which I will cherish lifelong. It was a dream come true to experience this success after going through the two failures. But the pain and fear that the miscarriages left on us is something we couldn't come out of until we saw our baby first time. We couldn't do anything on a very happy note as we were afraid whether this attempt would also add on to our failure list. We only shared this news with our parents after we heard the heart beat and to our extended family after 5th month detailed scan. However after all the struggle and fear, this time we had a successful journey through pregnancy in which I was very active and had a very normal delivery with a healthy baby. God answered our prayers and blessed us with an angel. My prayers and wishes to all those moms-to-be and dads-to-be to have a successful journey towards embracing parenthood and stay positive and strong throughout.
