I set very clear rules about handphone use when I hired my helper. This helped set expectations from the very beginning and she has never used it when she is not supposed to be using it. Here were some rules we set: 1. If she is with my daughter - playing with her, taking care of her etc at home -- then the handphone cannot be with her. Her entire attention has to be on my child. 2. She can be on her handphone while doing ironing, as it does not distract her. she puts her headphones on and talks/listens to music. 3. If she has stepped out of the house with my child (in the playground etc, handphone should be on, should have credit and should be in the pocket in vibrator mode) this is in case I need to reach her, or she needs to reach me. She cannot be on any other call. 4. When we are not at home, she is welcome to be on the handphone all the time, as long as the work that was assigned it done properly. 5. No handphone while cooking/serving dinner.

I feel the extent should be the extent of trust you have build with your helper. Mine sometimes uses her hand phone late at night (3am) and she explains she can't get back to sleep after feeding the baby at night. I find that ok because night feeds are tough. I allow her freedom of usage (but not on my wifi) so that's a natural barrier (price of 4g). I communicate constantly with her and shared my views w her upfront. In fact, 3 times before she gets my intention - as long as doesn't interfere w your duties, you can use it, discreetly.

I like Sumatis answer. Honestly I think its purely about agreeing on (maybe better than setting) rules. We have not done that with our helper since she's actually not using it at all when with our son. Late at night when we come home and she's still up, we see her watch videos and so on, but during her own time, that's completely up to her in our view.

If it is affecting her work and she is unable to perform her tasks well, then you should have a talk with her and let her know your preference. Some friends with helpers only allow them to use their phones after their chores for the day are done.

thanks
