Bacteria around vagina before birth

Hi moms, did u get yourself tested for bacteria around your vagina before birth for baby’s safety? Did your doctor advised you to? I am 35weeks and doctor wanted to do it but I told them that I’m uncomfortable with it and it was not compulsory as well. Any complications after doing it? I’m just traumatised each time they insert something in my vagina.
