The glucose test is performed to test gestational diabetes (GD). GD happens when the mother does not have diabetes but has high blood sugar levels as a result of pregnancy. The test is carried out between 26 to 28 weeks. If your first blood sample showed a blood glucose level of greater than 5.5mmol/l and the second was above 9mml/l you will be diagnosed as having gestational diabetes. If you have GD, nurse will call you in the next few days to fix an appointment with gynae to advise your diets and how to record your blood glucose level at home (using a machine). You will be offered a blood test during the first 24 hours after you’ve given birth and another 6 weeks after you’ve given birth to check that your blood sugar levels have returned to normal. Up to 50% of women who are diagnosed with GD will develop non-insulin dependent diabetes at some stage in their lives. If you have been diagnosed with GD you are advised to continue to follow the advice you were given about diet and exercise during pregnancy and to have your blood glucose levels tested each year. http://www.mamamaternity.co.nz/mama-maternity-abc/planning-your-pregnancy-care/testing-for-gestational-diabetes-gdm/

Just to add on, Glucose test will be easier if you are fond of sweets - cos Lord! It's like drinking a quarter of a honey bottle straight up! (Ugh I can still remember how I begged for a gallon of water that day!) For that diagnostic test, you'll be asked to fast overnight. Your blood will be drawn in the morning, and then you'll drink a higher-concentration glucose mixture. This is what the glucose concentrate looks like - the one given to me during the test.
