A person with chickenpox is contagious 1 to 2 days before the rash appears until all blisters have formed scabs. It takes from 10 to 21 days after exposure for someone to develop chickenpox, therefore, it would not be advisable to take the vaccine immediately. FYI FOR INFANTS, CHILDREN AND ADULTS Children under 13 years old should get 2 doses of the chickenpox vaccine at these ages: 1st dose: 12 through 15 months of age 2nd dose: 4 through 6 years of age (may be given earlier, if at least 3 months after the 1st dose) The second dose may be given at an earlier age if it is given at least 3 months after the first dose. People 13 years of age and older (who have never had chickenpox and never received chickenpox vaccine) should get two doses at least 28 days apart. MMRV is licensed for use in children 12 months to 12 years of age. Your child’s doctor can help you decide which vaccine to use. However, pregnant women should wait to get the chickenpox vaccine until after they have given birth. Women should not get pregnant for 1 month after getting the chickenpox vaccine.

It takes a window frame of about 10 to 21 days for someone who hasn't had chickenpox to catch it from someone who is currently having chickenpox. According to online article, taking the vaccine within 5 days after being expose reduces the risk of getting chicken pox or at least reduces the severity of it. Here's an online article should you need more information: http://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com/content/infections/art2865.html

Definitely visit your doctor and get a vaccination asap!! When did your family member contract chicken pox? I have linked couple of articles both of which agree that vaccination helps even after being exposed. http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/varicella/basic-vacc-after-exposed.htm http://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com/content/infections/art2865.html
