Epidural

I have low pain threshold. i want to know when can i ask for epidurals? if my contractions at home is more than 5 mins intervals can i still come down to the hospital?

I got mine when I was 3 cm dilated. I was very lucky because at 3 cm, I didnt feel any pain so my labour was painless
