I think one should not take the charge of cleaning baby's ears on oneself. If you think that your baby's ears need cleaning, take her to the ENT doctor or consult the baby's paediatrician. And in general you can clean the ear just from outside without interfering with the inside of the ear with cotton dipped in warm water. I repeat, do not try to put it inside to take out the wax. Do not use ear buds or anything to take out the wax. Wax is just a normal thing to happen, and in babies the wax even falls off the ear. http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/cleaning_eyes,_nose_and_ears.html
in the first 2 to 3 months you won't really have to clean your baby's ears. after that, you can use a Q-tip and very gently use it to wipe off any visible dirt. you can just make it a bit damp with water and wipe the outer surface of your baby's ears. when cleaning the inside of the ear, just do it on the edges. please do not try to clean near the eardrum. if you notice any wax buildup or dirt near the eardrum, take the help of the pediatrician to get it cleaned.
i used to clean my baby's ears with the help of a Q-tip. i would just make it a bit damp with water and gently clean the easily visible areas, without really going towards the ear canal. that is an area you should definitely avoid. i did it only once in about 2 or 3 weeks, and it was enough to keep the ears clean. also, i would make sure that for the first 2 years, the doctor checked the ears each time of the visit to make sure there was no wax buildup.
