Needy Baby?

My 7mo will cry if no one is sitting with him. Even if it’s just 3 steps away to take a drink of water. We have tried to constantly talk to him while moving away so he knows we are still around. We try not to carry him everytime he cries. Is this temporary or do I have to train him to accept / learn some distance?
