How do you create great memories for your kids; that they will later look back on as adults and embrace you for?

Spending time with them is wat I feel is important cause I'm from a broken family n I never had a picture taken with my mum n dad together .

What events from your childhood do you feel you need to shield your own children from? Are there ways that this has led to excessive control?

I feel that the issue of bullying was not in the spotlight when I was growing up and parents (at least mine) didn't see it as a cause of concern. Emphasis on studies was much more important and everything else should be put aside. As a result, I feel that I grew up self conscious, wary and suspicious of pretty much anyone that came into my life. Opening up my heart was as equally hard. But I'm better now but looking back to my childhood makes me determined not to let that repeat for my kids. I don't intend to shield my kids too much from things because experience is the best teacher but if the experience is causing them pain or discomfort, I want them to be able to come to me and tell me. I'll try my best to make things better for them.

What are your greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses as a parent?

I see myself as a very independent, tolerant and adaptable person and I think that this will translate well into being a parent. Having lived away in another continent without my immediate family support has made me a stronger person and I know this will count towards being a mother. That being said, my independence and strength are my weaknesses too. I'm so used to being on my own, I forget that I can ask for help, that I have loved ones who will do anything for me. When I become a parent, asking for help from loved ones should be second nature and there isn't any shame in it -- which is something I should remember.

I'm looking to start a family soon and I'd like to prepare myself for what's to come! Can someone give me an Ultimate Guide/Checklist of how I can better prepare myself for pregnancy / things to do: financially & emotionally ?

How can we teach children to self-regulate their emotions?

We need to acknowledge their feelings (through empathy) and then guide them on what they can do about these feelings - you can come out with suggestions. For example when they are feeling sad, they can think about positive things like.....when they feel intimidated, they can think about how they are capable in other things too etc etc. Yo can have a simple 2-3 step guidiance that you suggest to your child that that child can use each time and with time, they will use these steps to regulatie their emotions on their own

How do you know when you're 'ready' to be a parent; what are the socio-emotional matters to consider?

I've came across this article which highlighted some important points to consider when deciding if it's the "right" time: http://psychcentral.com/lib/what-you-need-to-consider-before-having-kids/ Personally, I feel that it is important that both parties are ready and are "on the same page" before making any family planning decisions. Also, like what the article has mentioned, it is important to ask yourself "why you want to have a child". I feel that this will give valuable insights as to whether or not your are indeed "ready" to have a child. Just sharing some thoughts. :)
