Dr Lisa Chin at Gleneagles comes up a lot as a solid choice, she's been around for a good while and quite a few mums I know have delivered with her, some even going back for their second child, which says something. Dr Chia Yin Nin is another name that gets mentioned, especially for general gynaecological concerns beyond just delivery. A colleague of mine also had good things to say about Dr Hong Sze Ching, though she splits her time between Gleneagles and Mount Alvernia, so worth checking her current schedule before you commit. Overall I'd say the key is finding someone whose communication style suits you, experienced doctors are one thing, but feeling comfortable enough to ask all your questions matters just as much during pregnancy.

Oh this is such a fun question, I love that Christmas dessert time is coming up soon! My family always does a mix of local and Western treats because honestly no one can agree, so we just do everything lah. My kids go crazy over log cake every year, especially the chocolate ones from the bakeries around Orchard, and I always make sure to get one early before they sell out. We also always have some pineapple tarts on the side because it just feels very Singapore Christmas to me, and the little ones love snacking on them while the adults chat.

Finding the right preschool for your little one can feel overwhelming, and it is totally normal to want to ask around before deciding. I don't have a specific recommendation for Choa Chu Kang right now, but a friend of mine tried a few centres in a nearby area and said the best way is really to visit in person and see how the teachers interact with the kids. You can also check the MSF-registered centre list or ask your neighbours in the CCK area as they would have the most up to date experience. Hope you find a good fit for your child soon lah!

Oh this sounds really useful, a few of my mum friends and I were just talking about how our kids are starting to show signs of stress from school work. Wah, a few of us in my mum group actually discussed this quite recently, the general consensus is that signing up for the supplement at 30 is smarter than waiting, because premiums are locked in at your entry age and don't increase as you get older, so the total premiums you pay over your lifetime actually work out cheaper compared to someone who starts at 40. Someone in my mum group mentioned that the base CareShield Life premiums for women start around $253 a year at age 30, and you can top it up with a supplement to get that higher monthly payout of $800 to $1,500 if you become severely disabled, all payable through Medisave, so no cash outlay. Some mums love the peace of mind it gives, though a couple had questions about the eligibility criteria for claims and wanted to make sure they understood exactly what counts as "severely disabled" before committing. Definitely worth sitting down with a licensed advisor to go through the fine print properly before you sign up!

Sped school

Anyone have kids in sped school? Able to provide some reviews of the school and curriculum? Tia.

Oh yes, a few of us in my mum circle have kids in SPED schools so happy to share what we've heard! It really depends on the school, Pathlight comes up a lot, and the general consensus is that the curriculum is quite well-tailored for kids with ASD, with a good focus on social skills and life skills alongside academics, which many mainstream schools just don't have the bandwidth for. My friend whose son is at Eden School said the programme is very structured around empowering the kids to be more independent, which she really appreciates. Some mums love the smaller class sizes and specialised support, though a few did mention it takes time for the kids to adjust to the expectations around self-discipline and independent learning. Also worth knowing, MOE is opening three more SPED schools by mid-2026, so if you're on a waitlist now, the situation should hopefully improve soon!
