Kid Weight Loss

My 3-year-old lost 1 kilo in a couple of weeks, but got taller by 2 cm. Should I worry about the weight loss?

No need to worry! It's totally normal that kids that age lose a bit of weight as they grow taller.

Dyslexia??

My 5yo daughter still confused with number 6 8 9. I teach her and ask her to remember the shape . I even focused all the time to teach her this 3 number. But still when i test her the answer is mixed up. She never answer correctly. She doesn't have problem with alphabet or other number . Is this sign of dyslexia? Do i need to bring her see doctor?

Hi! 6 and 9 are the most commonly confused numbers in that age group. It is because the shapes are similar and inverted. So I don't think it is dyslexia if she understands other numbers. There are 2 things you can do. 1) How do you draw 9? is it curved as it looks here or like a mirror image of P? If she is confused, you can swap the way it looks. 2) This should be the first one, ideally. Children are confused because they do not understand the concept of numbers. Make her count and draw! You can also give her cooked spaghetti to play with, to form numbers out of it. It is a fun way to learn how to write/draw. The key is repetition. So be patient, and everything will fall in place. p.s. I used to be confused between p and q; and b and d. It is common, so don't worry!

My Threenager Nightmare

Ever since my daughter turned 3 years old, she has become such a huge pain in the butt. Always saying no, doesn't want to listen, fights us all the time. I am really hoping this is just a phase and that it will pass. But in the meantime, how do I manage the behavior? I try my best to stay calm but really I want to strangle her!

I distract as much as possible. So the moment she is cranky I go “omg, is there a Lizard in the ceiling - omg can u help me catch it?” Or I make her tantrum into a game. So I tell her she says no 1 time and then I say yes 1 time then she needs to say no 2 times and me yes 2 times. And we need to get it right till 5 - and then we can high five. She always ends up playing along and then bursting out in giggles when she says no wrongly.

Any parents who sent their child to Columbia Academy in Toh Guan? Can I have reviews of this childcare in terms of its philosophy, curriculum, food & quality of the teachers?

It’s a literacy focused preschool. Quite local. Caring Teachers. Teacher Emily is a good principal. My only feedback is the uniform looks like ikea staff in blue and yellow!!!

My daughter is turning 5 years old in four months. My husband and I have always thrown a birthday party for her. I'd like it to be different this time. What do you suggest? Thank you.

How about bringing her on a trip? Make it a family vacation but perhaps to Disney? Heard that it is really magical to a child. I think she would be able to appreciate the place and remember the trip now that she is five. :)

Hi Mummies & Daddies My son who is 2yo in Playgroup since November 2017. I received his progress report from the teachers. He has shown slight improvements compared to last year. He is still quiet & shy in class. He seems to be lacking in Chinese. Any ways that I can do on his current progress? Thank you!

Be part of his learning process by engaging and speaking to him more in Chinese! Give him words of encouragement on his progress- that will greatly motivate him!
