Yio Chu Kang childcare locale

Hi mummies, any recommendations on childcare centre location @ Yio Chu Kang! TIA?

My girl is currently under kinderland kindergarten. I would think its overpriced for a kindergarten but I do not have much choices other then PCF around my area when I did her enrolment. Will u consider kovan? There is catholic kindergarten which u can explore... Fees are cheaper than kinderland and my friends there who send the kids to afternoon session is quite happy.

Hi mummies! When should a child start to know how to read? My child is in nursery class bt has yet to progress to learn how to read she is only able to recognise words through memorising. And advice how am i able to guide her how to read and blend the words?

Hi, not to worry mummy. My gal is in K1 and only knows how to read now. Every child's learning pace is different and blending words will come when they know phonics well. Otherwise, they can only memorize. I started my gal with simple books from Peter and Jane (repetitive words). Phonics from letterland (Youtube or purchased off shelf). As she knows the alphabet sounds, then we progress to blend some of the words.

My kid is not even a year old but I would like to start understanding the various preschool options for her. 1. Would my kid be at a disadvantage if she starts nursery instead of pre-nursery at 3 years old? I want my girl to enjoy her childhood before embarking in a long education battle. Yet I'm worried that she might be at a disadvantage for starting school a year later than her peers. 2. Government kindergarten vs private kindergartens- are the curriculum similar? Is there any government subsidy if I were to enrol my girl to a private school, or are the government kindergartens like first Skool and moe kindergarten good enough? 3. What should I look out for when considering which school to enrol her in? Do all schools have open house, and if the open house reflects truly the manner classes and activities are conducted? 4. Wait list- how early should I place my kid on the wait list, and if I can place her in several schools' wait lists at one go? Thanks.

Personally, I feel that: 1) Your child will not be at a disadvantage if she went to nursery instead of pre nursery. I have friends who don't even send their kids to nursery, and only started school proper at kindergarten stage and they are not lagging behind at all. As long as you teach your child the basics at home and expose them to socialization, seriously, I feel there is no need to send them to pre nursery. 2) I think government schools are just as competent as private ones. But that's my 2 cents and i know some do not feel the same way. 3) Open houses tend to hype things up a bit. I feel that doing a visit during school hours or asking for a tour will be much more realistic and practical. 4) I heard that you can start as early as you want. For the more popular private schools, i read about parents being on the wait list as soon as they found out that they were pregnant. Don't know how true that is though.

Anyone have any recommendations on weekend classes I can attend with my 10 mth baby. I want to let her learn and explore. I am an FTWM and my mom takes care of her. She watches TV all day and I want her to learn through play. I have spoken to my mom about limiting TV time but she said it's easier to take care of her that way. I have no other choice. Thanks in advance!

Kids in Finland don't start their formal education until they're 7 years old, many of them still illiterate. Finnish preschool children learn how to play nice together, how to be fair, how to say "I'm sorry." In both spontaneous and structured settings - think games of tag or teacher-guided activities to build teamwork - they fulfill their primary duty of being kids, moving fast and loose and making plenty of mistakes that turn into learning opportunities. And unlike Most other country system, Finland's preschool system is wholly paid for by the government, leveling the playing field for everyone. Personally I like it and I wish more countries can adopt the Finns way of education

Looking for best app for my preschooler to download to learn Chinese. Pls recommend.

There are apps like Pleco that allow users to input queries using pinyin, voice commands or handwriting. The text-to-speech function in these apps allows kids to sound out characters. http://www.pleco.com/

Anywhere with National Day celebrations this evening (8 Aug)? Best if there is fireworks display too.

Some of my friends plan to head out to Tanjong Rhu Promenade tomorrow. Apparently, there is a look-out tower near the stretch of water where you can enjoy fireworks with the National Stadium in the background. Sounds like a nice and fun idea :)

Looking for a preschool that focuses strongly on Mandarin. Any recommendation?

Surprised no one said Nanyang Kindergarten. The school only has nursery curriculum 100% in Chinese. Another kindy focused on chinese is Newton Kindergarten.

It really boils down to when you are ready, as much as when your baby is ready. We put ours in at 19+months old and he loves it. He looks forward to going to school daily.

What is all this hype about flash card memorisation and mental mathematical abilities? Does it really help? Does it affect the child's brain? Or is it all rubbish? I've heard my Aunty go on and on about this and how her grandson is insanely smart due to flash cards and at the same time I've heard that it's all nonsense. What' do you ladies think?

It definitely helps, but I think sending your child for classes and brain training is actually much more effective, frankly
