How to train kid to sleep independently?

My youngest is 3+ years old. He is very attached to me as he is a breastfed child. I am trying to wean him off from latching to sleep and has succeeded a few times. He will hug me and/or use me as his pillow to sleep. He will often wake when I try to shift him away after he sleeps. Saw that they will be discussing on this topic in this webinar.
