Actually there is no rule that says that they 'must' wear a hat all the time. It depends on the weather and also the condition in which the baby was born (some hospitals insist that your baby wear one for a few days). But here's why you can avoid it: - Baby's body has a natural scent and oxytocin releases that scent and if you make him wear a hat, you cover it up. This study proved that the delightful smell further helps you bond with the baby. You can read this study that proved the same. Ref link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26277824
They actually don't have to, unless the environment is extremely cold. You can put on a hat for him if you want to and your infant isn't fussy. http://www.babycenter.com/408_when-can-my-baby-stop-wearing-those-infant-hats_1368473.bc

For me, I let my baby wears hat when it is hot during outdoor activities. When baby is less than a month, I will wear beanie for him/her to prevent him from catching a cold in aircon room.
It isn't a must.. It's more to protect them from the cold. My son hated if I tried to put on a hat on him so I didn't... so many newborns hats that I got for him are unused :(
I wear in cold environments to prevent rapid heat loss as the head will be the first to lose heat!
thanks
