You can refer to this article for tips on looking after your baby’s teeth. According to the article, you can start cleaning your baby’s gums and teeth weeks after he/she is born. Simply wet some gauze with distilled or tap water to wipe away the milky films on the palate, tongues, cheeks and gums. You can do the same when teeth when they start emerging. http://sg.theasianparent.com/how-to-look-after-your-babys-first-teeth/

You can inculcate the habit in your newborn from young. It's good to get them used to the idea of brushing their (future) teeth. I started cleaning my newborn's gums from the day she arrived home. Wrap a wet washcloth or gauze and rub it gently across her gums. http://www.babycenter.com/0_how-to-care-for-your-babys-gums-and-emerging-teeth_126.bc
