At what age shld the child start learning to eat on their own?

I did traditional weaning, I gave my baby her snack and let her eat by herself at 7 months old. now at 17 months she still can't eat with spoon and I think I shall wait a little more as I can't stand the mess.i think it depends on individual parents too
