Oh mama, please don't be hard on yourself, you did not cause this, and it does not make you a bad mum at all. Febrile seizures at this age are actually more common than people realise, and from what I've heard, they tend to happen when the fever spikes quickly, so even a super attentive parent can't always catch it in time. The most important things I've come to understand are: during the seizure, turn baby gently to the side so nothing blocks the airway, loosen any tight clothing, and stay as calm as you can (easier said than done, I know). After it stops, you can give children's paracetamol to help bring the fever down, but do head to the doctor or A&E right away, especially since this is the first time it's happened. A friend of mine went through this with her toddler and the paediatrician explained that most kids outgrow febrile seizures by age five, and if the seizures last longer than five minutes or happen more than once in 24 hours, the doctor may prescribe something to keep at home just in case. Please do check everything with your own paediatrician though, because every child is different and they can give you the best guidance for your little one. You're doing great, hang in there!
