My parents are very conservative, they always ask me to give my baby water after breast feeding. How should i explain to them or should i follow their advice?
Exclusively breastfed babies do not need additional water – breastmilk is 88% water and supplies all the fluids that your baby needs. There are some problems associate with feeding water to exclusive breastfed baby below 6 months old e.g. too much water can lead to a serious condition called oral water intoxication and too much water can interfere with breastfeeding because it fills baby up so that he nurses less. http://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/baby-water/ You may want to show your family member on the news of the tragic happened where a mother diluted her breastmilk using water to her 10-week-old and cause water intoxication. http://ph.theasianparent.com/baby-dies-after-drinking-breastmilk-mixed-with-water/

By drinking more water it can fill up baby leading to them drinking less milk which can lead to malnutrition or water intoxication. Many elderly believe in feeding plain water to baby likely because they had fed their children with water and they grew up without issue. You can try showing them cases where babies get intoxicated by drinking water and explain to them that you rarer be careful than sorry. Here's are a few case studies. http://www.popsugar.com/moms/Baby-Dies-After-Parents-Dilute-Breast-Milk-37511059 http://www.hkjpaed.org/pdf/2002;7;165-168.pdf

If baby is less than 6 months, better to tell them that they're not encouraged to drink water and show them the articles that the mummies have shared. For my case I was worried that baby would reject water in future so I still gave mine about a teaspoon everyday. If baby is 6 months or more then by all means just take their advice and give a little but not more than 2-3oz as it may interfere with their milk intake and cause malnutrition.

Breastmilk (especially foremilk) is more than 80% water. Babies do not require water even in countries with warmer climates, like ours. http://www.who.int/features/qa/breastfeeding/en/

Explain to your parents the consequences that can happen, as explained in the earlier posts, I'm sure they will understand if it concerns your baby's well-being and health :)
