Breast feed

Lactation consultant told me to feed the baby before baby cry . But I can’t wake my baby up , am I supposed to force wake him up to feed or just wait for him to cry?

I think she meant when baby is awake but before baby cries. If baby is sleeping, I wouldn’t wake him
