My best friend used mehendi during pregnancy and her doctor said that as long as the formulation is pure and natural, there are no issues. Be sure to check the packaging because some henna brands use chemicals to enhance the colours, avoid those. Also, the doctor cautioned her against using black henna though. Apparently black henna contains a chemical called para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is a chemical often used in hair dyes. Best to avoid black henna when you are pregnant. Even if have used it before pregnancy and never reacted to it, you might be more sensitive to it now that you are with child.

these days there are various types of mehendi that are available in the market. while some of them are natural some also have added chemicals in them. while natural henna is a safe choice and does not contain any chemicals, the black henna is almost always added with some chemicals. this can be very harmful because of the PPD dey in it that is known to cause various types of allergies and problems. i would suggest that if you really want to use it during your pregnancy, use the natural henna and even then, colour only from the mid-length till the tips, and completely avoid the scalp and roots.
