I recently went to see a friend's baby boy who is six months old and while I was playing with him, i thought that his eyes were not focussing properly. I am concerned about his well being, but this friend is very sensitive and very touchy (especially since the baby was conceived with great difficulty). How do I tell her that the baby might need to be checked up?

You can try to play with her baby games which need baby to focus such as putting a toy infront of her baby and move it left and right. Let her mother discover herself that her baby is not focusing. Then suggest to her that it will be good if she can bring her baby for a checkout. You can share with her this post which mentioned that baby's eyes should be able to follow the movement of object at 2 months old. http://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/children-vision-development You do not need to worry too much even if she refuses. This is because paediatrician will usually check on baby's development during the monthly vaccination visits in the 1st 6 months.

There will be periodic medical checks for the child from newborn all the way to 3 years old. My friends had also told me that my child's eyes were not focused and like cross eyed. I took my gal for checks and learnt that it is normal for children under 1 to have cross eyes or not able to focus. Thankfully, all is well. She is 5 now and has beautiful big eyes. As a friend, it will be good to share with your friend that periodic medical checks are v good and helpful as they check on the child's eyes, hearing etc.
