Just wanted to update if anyone came back to this question looking for an answer. I went for my first appointment at week 9 and did not manage to skip the transvaginal scan. I found the probe insertion and removal a bit painful though not unbearable. Once the probe is inserted, it just feels uncomfortable when the scan is being done but no pain during that part of the process.
Pretty unlikely to avoid it at week 7.. I had one done at week 9 , but tt was under subsidised route, so I'm not sure if it's the norm. It's not painful, you'll just feel pressure when the doc presses the wand to scan the fetus. If it really scares u, you can call in to enquire first at which week they're do an abdominal ultrasound instead of a transvaginal one.
I had it when i was pregnant with my first. I cant rmmbr if it was painful but It was traumatic and i avoided it for my 2nd, 3rd and 4th. For my 2nd i think i waited till 9 or 10 weeks if i’m not wrong. My 4th i waited till 11 weeks to polyclinic to get referral and got my first appt at KKH at 12 weeks 6 days.
I have vaginismus and had to do multiple transvaginal scans. Surprisingly mine wasn’t too bad and the technicians conducting it were aware and very gentle with me. Discomfort yes, cos I have vaginismus, but momentary. If you don’t have vaginismus, I was told it would be even less of a discomfort.
I had a transvaginal scan at 6 weeks when the abdominal one failed (couldn't see clearly), it wasn't painful at all (i have low threshold for pain) Just discomfort when pressed down to see. My concern was just how the same probe has been in and out of so many people.
For my first, I only went at 10 weeks as it was during the COVID period and I also did not want to risk doing a transvaginal. But for my 2nd and 3rd, I went at abt 8+ weeks and babies were alr visible in ultrasound and could hear the heartbeats clearly.
Unfortunately, I didn’t managed to avoid at my first gynae check up 😔 it wasn’t pain but just discomfort. You will get distracted when you see your baby and get to listen to their heartbeat 💗
I didn't do transvaginal as had vaginismus. my gynae did abdominal scan all the way for me and I'm going into 6 mths now. you may request for that
Transvaginal scan is the most accurate for the aging and checking heartbeat of the embryo/fetus at 7-8 weeks. It's best for identifying your EDD.
Nothing wrong with a transvaginal scan, you will only feel slight discomfort, nothing out of the ordinary. Not possible to avoid
