How would you know if it's false labor or the real thing?

The intensity of the the labour pain would be very very high and increasing. Else, show or water bag break would be other indications. Do take note of all these when you are close to EDD. Some of these happened as early as 1 month before EDD. All the best !

My ob-gyn recommended that I only go to the hospital if the interval of my contractions are 5 mins or less. I suggest that you monitor the intensity and interval of your contractions.
