Yes, babies do know how to differentiate between day and night. It is due to they get used to the routine of the mother's while in womb. However, some babies do mix up day and night. Initially they don't. Their instinct to eat is what awakes them at odd hours. However gradually their sleep cycle will start correcting with shorter day time sleeps and longer night time naps.
