Did anyone use a low lying mattress for infants/newborns to sleep on? Is it safe?

some parents place their newborn on matteress to sleep. But usually for afternoon nap time in the living room where everyone can see the baby. Not recommend at night esp if your spouse wakes up to go toilet as he may not notice LO is there sleeping. Best to put in cot for night time
