Living separately while waiting for BTO

Hi all, any couples lived separately (1-2 years) after getting married while waiting for your flat to be ready? If so, how to explain to in laws that we want to live separately?

We did because it’s too leh chey and I prefer staying with my parents also. They felt it was weird for a married couple to stay apart but not really actually. Time flies by fast too. We alternate stay at each other’s house over on the weekends instead.
