Maternity insurance is not a save-all. You see all the people saying "oh they wouldn't have to pay tens of thousands of cash if they bought the insurance" etc, but you pay $500, all you get is a max claim of $5000. Also, don't be misled into thinking that all complications will be covered. For example, if your labour takes too long and baby is distressed and need an emergency c section, which costs thousands, it won't be covered. You need to check properly what is covered and what is not to decide if you feel is worth it. For me, I bought maternity insurance not for the pregnancy or birth part, but for the post birth part - if baby has congenital issues and needs hospitalisation, and also for the guaranteed life insurance. If you think this is important, then do research on which is the best life insurance in case baby has any issues. I recommend life insurances with long disability coverage, good CI and also early CI coverage addon. NTUC life insurance has a huge coverage but then it doesn't cover disability, for example. Some have to buy the insurance as a bundle, for example, like AIA, where maternity is bundled with the life insurance, and some you don't have to buy until baby is born, but can buy if you want to with no underwriting needed. This may have changed so you need to check it up on your own.

Hi, I purchased Manulife Ready mummy. This was before prudential informed me that they suddenly had guaranteed hospitalisation plan! this was perfect, but unfortunately I had already purchased manulife. Fortunately my baby was born healthy and I can buy whatever insurance I wanted and no need to activate the guaranteed life insurance.
