New Mobile App To Better Connect Parents And Schools
Parents Gateway – the mobile app that connects parents and schools on key administrative matters – was officially launched by Minister for Education, Mr Ong Ye Kung, on 2 Jan 2019, at Huamin Primary School. In partnership with the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), the Ministry of Education (MOE) has developed Parents Gateway - a one-stop mobile app for parents and schools to better support their children’s educational journey through improved communications. The app, available on IOS and Android for parents, allows schools to send updates on programmes and activities. It also allows parents to perform administrative functions such as providing consent for their children to participate in school activities. Parents can use their SingPass accounts, SMS 2FA or OneKey Token1 to gain access to Parents Gateway. Parents using Android devices are advised to log in using SMS 2FA or OneKey token. Through this dedicated account, parents will be able to receive information and perform administrative functions for their children, even if the children are in different classes, or from different schools. Currently, there are 66 primary and secondary schools taking part in the initiative. MOE will progressively extend the app to all schools Additional services will be added to the Parents Gateway portal incrementally. For example, by the end of 2019, parents can look forward to completing travel declarations on their mobile devices, and updating their contact details.

New 'Back To School' Maths Programme For Parents To Teach Kids Better
Mums and dads, do you feel a little lost when you are unable to help your kids with their Math homework? Those Math sums seem to be getting tougher by the year! Have you considered "going back to school" to refresh and re-learn some Math? A new pilot programme helps parents learn Math concepts, so they can support their children better. The KelasMateMatika @ CC programme (KMM) is an initiative of three key Malay/Muslim organisations: Mendaki, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) and the People's Association Malay Activity Executive Committees Council (Mesra). It is a free educational programme, and an enhanced version of self-help group Mendaki's existing Tiga M programme. The first pilot phase is running at three divisions in Marsiling, Nee Soon East and Pasir Ris East. The KMM programme is targeted at families with children aged between four and six years, and whose household per capita income is $450 or less a month. Over six sessions, parents learn basic numeracy concepts as well as techniques to build the child's self-esteem and confidence as they learn. There are also interactive activities for the children to pick up math concepts better. The sessions aim to encourage family bonding as well, through fun activities like playing games, making a halal bento set or fairy lamp, and doing zumba exercises.
Singapore Secondary School Teacher Allegedly Pocketed S$40,000 From Students
A former English head of department (HOD) at Woodgrove Secondary School is on trial for allegedly pocketing S$40,000 from students. The money had been given by the children for purchase of learning materials, known as Excel packages. Maslinda Zainal, 44, allegedly over-collected money from the students. She is said to have misappropriated more than $21,000 in cash at the school between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2016. Between Jan 1 and April 7, 2017, she is believed to have misappropriated cash totalling almost $20,000. For the info, she had a gross monthly salary of S$8,800. She has now been suspended. It was the school's lower-secondary head for English, Ms Jacqueline Chan, who first detected something fishy. She then alerted the principal of the school, Mr Chee Chit Yeng. After a thorough check, the Principal then informed the Education Ministry's discipline unit and made a police report in April 2017. Maslinda is now on trial, and if convicted of criminal breach of trust, she could be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.

Justin Trudeau's great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, is William Farquhar!
It was raining world leaders in Singapore this past week! One of them in particular managed to steal a lot of hearts - he is Canadian PM Justin Trudeau. This is Mr Trudeau’s first visit to Singapore as Canadian PM. Meanwhile, did you know that Mr. Trudeau is more connected to Singapore than you had imagined? Yep, turns out that his great-great-great-great-grandmother was Esther Bernard, who was the daughter of Major-General William Farquhar. For the info, William Farquhar was the first British Resident and Commandant of Singapore from 1819 to 1823. Which means that, Justin Trudeau's great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, is William Farquhar! It is indeed a small world! Mr. Trudeau was seen proudly taking selfies with Ms Bernard's plaque at Fort Canning. "It was a very touching moment to see the history of my family, to appreciate all the criss-crossing, weaving links that make up each of our stories, and it's a nice moment for me to reflect on the connections and the paths that led to Canada from the founding of Singapore," he said.
