What should I expect from my first prenatal checkup?

You can actually prepare a list of questions before visit to gynae and ask during your first gynae consultation. During your first gynae visit, doctor will ask you some questions eg. your last mense date and did you do any home pregnancy test (if you didn't, your gynae will do a test for you either using pregnancy test kit or blood test), any bleeding or cramps so far, any morning sickness and etc. After that gynae will proceed to do a scan for you. If you are less than 6-7weeks, gynae will perform transvaginal scan for you to detect sac and fetus. If you are more than 6-7weeks, gynae will perform transabdominal scan for you (if there is no heartbeat detected during the scan, another apppointment will be scheduled in a week time) After the scan, gynae will prescribe folic acid and prenatal vitamins for you if you have not started to take them. Lastly, she will schedule a date for your next gynae visit.
