Risk of measles during pregnancy

Measles is a highly contagious disease, so if you don't have immunity to it, there is a high risk of getting the illness if you come into contact with someone who is infected. Do note that you cannot get the MMR vaccine during pregnancy. Having measles during pregnancy will increase the risk of premature labour, miscarriage and a low birth weight baby.

If you've not had measles in childhood, or haven't taken the MMR vaccine, and are exposed to the measles virus during pregnancy, you should talk to your doctor about getting an immune globulin shot to try to prevent the disease from developing.

Thankfully, measles is unlikely to cause birth defects in the baby if contracted during pregnancy. However, you may possibly be at an increased risk of miscarriage, premature labour or a low birth weight baby.

If you’ve not contracted measles, chances of you contracting it is there. Please consult your gynecologist if you’re at risk.
