Herbal teas are naturally caffeine free, so caffeine is not an issue when consuming this type of tea. The concern with consuming herbal teas during pregnancy is the lack of data available on most herbs and their effects on a developing fetus. There are mixed opinions on the safety of herbal teas, for both pregnant and non-pregnant women. Most commercial brands of herbal teas are thought to be safe for anyone to consume in reasonable amounts. Herbal tea companies, such as Celestial Seasonings, report that they do not use any herbs that are considered dangerous and choose to use herbs from guidelines that the FDA has published.
I generally avoid any forms of herbs (especially medicinal herbs) when I was pregnant. Better to be safe than sorry. Certain herbs like ginseng can cause abnormal levels of hormones and may result in mutation of genes. However ginger and peppermint are known to ease nausea and should be able to consume in moderate amounts. http://sg.theasianparent.com/10-tips-to-cure-morning-sickness/
Teas made from herbs like peppermint and thyme may be safe to drink occasionally in small amounts while you're pregnant or nursing. But drinking excessive amounts of any tea can cause health problems for you and your developing baby. If you are talking about chinese herbal tea, I would advise you to check with the TCM physician as there may be some herbs unsuitable for pregnant woman.
My wife didn't take any herbal drink for the baby's safety. She just followed what her doctor prescribed like iron supplement, etc. Always consult your doctor when taking any medicine whether it's from drug stores or any types of herbs.
I did not consume any herbal drink during my pregnancy. Most herbal and fruit teas are thought to be safe in pregnancy, as long as you don't drink them in large amounts. But I suggest you check with your gynae before you do!
What is the purpose of your herbal drink consumption? If it only for health and not medication, then boil water with some ginger and palm sugar good for your morning. It kind of detox and also warmth your body
It's best to consult the TCM physician or your gynae on the type of herbal drinks that you can take. For me, I did not take any. However I do add wolfberries and ginseng to boost Qi.
