Cervical cerclage is the placement of stitches in the cervix camera.gif to hold it closed. In select cases, this procedure is used to keep a weak cervix (incompetent cervix) from opening early. When a cervix opens early, it may cause preterm labor and delivery. If you have an incompetent cervix, your doctor may recommend cervical cerclage. http://www.webmd.com/baby/cervical-cerclage-to-prevent-preterm-delivery I had a friend who went for cervical cerclage around 24 weeks of pregnant as she had signs of contractions and cervix dilation (about 2cm). Gynae immediately did a surgery for her and requested her to fully bedrest for 1 week. She had loose some of her mucus plug and experienced cramps prior to the dilation. She managed to hold her baby until 35weeks.

I haven't heard of this term but when I did google about it + read Jamie's above comments, it does sound pretty scary
