I chose my kids' PDs that are relatively near to my house. I will normally visit to a my first choice of PD and I have another PD to stand by in case the 1st choice PD is on holidays or clinic is closed. I will not continue to visit a PD if he/she: 1. Ignore my questions and not willing to take effort to explain. 2. Will prescribe antibiotics for my kid for almost all illness, even slight flu. 3. Being rude to my kid, e.g. cause injury during jab injection. 4. Not detailed in examination process, e.g. prescribe medicine soley based on my descriptions
I usually rely on friends' and relatives' recommendations :) One important criteria for me is that the PD responds quickly when I send him/her an SMS even during weekends. Generally, younger PD's are more likely to do this. This comes in handy when I have questions about emergencies (like when my baby fell off the bed), rashes (I send a photo too), and preliminary questions before actually going to the PD visit.
In addition to the comments above, you might also want to check if the paed has walk in hours. My sons current PD doesn't and it can be quite frustrating to find an available slot without a prior appointment. As a working mum, I also like Paed's who understand if I send the helper to the doctor and will be happy to call me and explain their diagnosis on the phone.
The following are part of my considerations: 1. Must be a breastfeeding advocate since I am breastfeeding 2. Accredited by our health card 3. Has Saturday clinic schedule, so that I don't need to take a vacation leave for my baby's checkup 4. Reply to SMS or answer phone calls
