At what age do babies or toddlers should be brought to the dentist?

I asked my dentist the same thing but according to him, he would suggest to bring my baby when he's a year old. He said some pedia dentists do unnecessary actions just so they can save a milk tooth which will eventually be replaced anyway. Would you believe, as young as 2 years old, he knew a kid who underwent root canal!
