My husband is programmer and I think it's a good skill to have but not sure if it's beneficial for young kids. It's important to develop their creativity and critical thinking skills but I think there are better ways to develop those than programming classes where they need to learn by heart a bunch of syntax.

Yup! Early exposure to programming will help in the future, and it's also a great skill to have. Of course, see whether your child is interested in it too :)
