It is quite normal as both of my kids experience the same thing when just started school. The reasons include: 1. Separation anxiety during the daytime when separating from you is making him upset. At night he/she will tend to wakeup to look for you. 2. Trying to adapt to the new environment in school and routine changes at home (after school). The night waking and crying will stop after the kid managed to settle down well in school. For my kids it lasted for about a month and some kids might even longer. Try not to scold him/blame him for night waking and crying. Stay beside his bed and use soft voices to reassure him mummy is here and not going anywhere. Offer him a hug and let him settle down and soothe him back to sleep. This is just a short phase.
May be something is irking him at school or he is not getting used to the environment. It would be a better idea to discuss it with the school teacher. May be you find a clue.
