mummies, what did you do for your child’s ankle sprain? any doctor recommendations?

hi mummies, hoping someone can share some advice! my son twisted his ankle during PE/sports yesterday and it’s quite swollen today. he can still walk but is limping and says it hurts quite a bit. i’ve been icing it and trying to get him to rest, but not sure if i should bring him to a doctor or just monitor for a few days. for those who’ve been through an ankle sprain with your kids, what did you do and how long did it take to recover? did you see a gp, physio or orthopaedic doctor? would really appreciate any recommendations too! 🙏

Hi mummy! My son had an ankle sprain before too, so I brought him to Dr Henry Chan, an orthopaedic surgeon in Singapore, to get it checked. After assessing his injury, Dr Chan advised ankle bracing as the sprain wasn’t a severe Grade 3 injury. We followed his advice and went for a follow up a week later. Thankfully, my son’s ankle was recovering well. I understand that some ankle injuries can be more serious and may require surgery, depending on the extent of the damage. Since your son’s ankle is swollen and he’s limping, I’d suggest getting it checked by an orthopaedic surgeon to find out what treatment is suitable. Hope he feels better soon, mummy! ❤️

I'd definitely bring him to see the PD or a GP just to be sure there's no fracture, since he's still limping quite a bit and the swelling is pretty significant. Once you've ruled that out, most ankle sprains do settle with rest, ice and elevation, though some parents I know have found physio helpful if the limp doesn't improve after a week or two. Recovery usually takes anything from a couple of weeks to a month depending on how bad the sprain is, so it's worth getting it checked early so you know what you're dealing with and can plan his activities accordingly.
