Diaper Powder

Hi moms. Is it necessary to apply powder to baby's bottom and pee pee area when changing their diaper? I've been using corn starch but recently just read an article that it is not good to use any powder. So just wear diaper without powder? Will it cause friction and then rashes? My baby is 20 mths old.
