Weaning

My LO is 6m+ now. For a start, we have been feeding him few teaspoonful of rice cereal for 4 days. To make our LO feel fuller at night, from 5th day onwards the last feeding we added a tablespoon full of cereal to mix with his formula. Is this correct procedure for weaning? Are we feeding LO too much rice cereal for a start?
