Baby's frequency of pooping (Please note that when I say eating solids, I'm referring to older babies 6 months and up) An exclusively breastfed baby older that 6 weeks is OK not to poop everyday (given that his stomach is soft and he is not being fussy). Transition from mixed/formula feeding to exclusively breastfeeding may result to skipping of poop but should be able to normalize after a few days. It may continue to skip as an EBF baby usually do (here things may vary depending on different factors, such as quantity of formula before transition, frequency of latching etc.). Needless to say that the transition has to be done properly or you may risk baby dehydrating. It is important to still continue to observe baby's pee output at this point (More input of milk, more output. Less or no input, less or no output) When is it NOT OK to skip poop? a) baby is newborn and below 6 weeks (some baby will skip pooping at about 5 weeks or so and this is still ok as long as baby is not fussy) b) baby is mixed or formula fed c) baby is eating solids already What to do when this happens? a) check baby's latch, early initiation of breastfeeding (as part of Unang Yakap) and unlimited time at the breast during the first few hours and days of baby's life should be done too b) skin to skin to encourage frequent latching c) if mixed/formula feeding, try your hardest to go back to exclusive breastfeeding d)regular massage of baby's tummy e) check the mother's diet (too much dairy can cause allergy that can manifest as constipation to baby) f) more fiber rich food for older babies (papaya, pineapple etc) g) have a check up with a breastfeeding advocate pedia if nothing seems to work and baby is showing distress or signs of failure to thrive Suppository is not acceptable to use at any given time. You have to solve the issue of why baby is not pooping, not just forcing baby to poop by inserting something into his anus. This may cause harm and make baby dependent on it too. Please be extra careful in giving advices about baby's poop. Ask baby's age first. Ask what are the circumstances. This is a major concern especially for very young babies and should not be taken (or answered) lightly.
