I always check the app permissions first, honestly. My boy's tablet got flooded with ads once because I didn't pay attention to what access the app was asking for, and it was a nightmare. I also read the reviews carefully, especially the recent ones, because apps change over time and what worked two years ago might be full of in-app purchases now. Content-wise I'm strict about age ratings, and I make sure the app actually lets me set parental controls properly before we download it. It does take a bit of time upfront but saves so much headache later when your kid isn't suddenly seeing stuff you didn't expect or the app isn't draining your device's battery.
