Yupp. Due to hormonal changes brought about by your period, milk supply will drop slightly. You might also notice cyclical decrease in milk supply before your period returns, as your body begins its return to fertility. You can help to increase milk supply during your period by: 1) Taking magnesium/calcium supplements. The drop in milk supply that is associated with your period can be associated with a drop in blood calcium levels which occurs in the middle of your menstrual cycle, around the time that you ovulate. 2) Oatmeal is known to have increased milk supply in menstruating breastfeeding mothers. No scientific prove but somehow it works for alot of women. 3) Nursing teas have been known to work too as they contain contain galactagogues like fenugreek, blessed thistle, and alfafa all of which may increase milk supply in some women.
Agreed - it's due to hormonal imbalance. The return of our period after giving birth has a great impact on our milk supply (which I also experienced and got bothered too!). Few days before our periods start, our blood calcium levels drop which can either or both: 1. Your milk supply will drop a bit 2. Your breastmilk flavour can change and baby will notice it as well. Once milk supply lessens, baby tend to latch more frequently but the change in flavour may cause baby to latch lesser. But according to the article below, this is just temporary. :) https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/menstrual-cycle-affects-baby-sleep/
Yes, having your period can drop your milk supply, but you can take calcium/magnesium supplements to regulate it. The drop in milk supply that is associated with your period can be associated with a drop in blood calcium levels which occurs in the middle of your menstrual cycle, around the time that you ovulate. To combat this, you can take a calcium/magnesium supplement. You can also try an herbal breastfeeding tea, or another galactagogue to help boost your milk supply. Talk to your doctor, a lactation consultant or a local breastfeeding group for advice and assistance.
It's definitely normal for yr suply to dip during this period. There are hormones changes but not to worry as this change is not permanent. This will usually last for 3-4 days but depends on individual. You may also want to take supplememt during this period to boost yr supply. Taking food like oatmeal helps for me.
Oh yes ... this is perfectly normal. Jia you, Mummy. Don't give up just cos your supply drop. It is due to hormones changes. Just keep latching or pumping to maintain your supply during this period of time. You may take some oatmeal to increase yr supply as well.
